Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,

even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;

it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs;

for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals;

and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity

and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in

sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself

with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue

and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline,

be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,

no less than the trees and the stars

you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,

whatever you conceive Him to be,

and whatever your labors and aspirations,

in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul.

With all its shams, drudgery,

and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful.

소란스럽고 바쁜 일상 속에서도 침묵 안에

평화가 있다는 사실을 기억하십시오.

사업상의 일에도 주의를 쏟으십시오.

세상은 속임수로 가득하기 때문입니다.

그러나

세상에 미덕이 있다는 것을 모르고 지나치지는 마십시오.

많은 사람들이 높은 이상을 위해 애쓰고 있고,

삶은 영웅적인 행위로 가득 차 있기 때문입니다.

당신 본연의 모습을 찾으십시오.

가식적인 모습이 되지 마십시오.

사랑에 대해서 냉소적이 되지 마십시오.

아무리 무미건조하고 꿈이 없는 상태에서도

사랑은 잔디처럼 돋아나기 때문입니다.

나이 든 사람들의 충고는 겸손히 받아들이고,

젊은이들의 생각에는 품위 있게 양보하십시오.

갑작스러운 불행에서 자신을 보호하려면

영혼의 힘을 키워야 합니다.

그러나 쓸데없는 상상으로 스스로를 괴롭히지 마십시오.

많은 두려움은 피로와 외로움에서 생겨납니다.

자신에게 관대해 지도록 노력하십시오.

당신은 나무나 별들과 마찬가지로 우주의 자녀입니다.

당신은 이곳에 머무를 권한이 있습니다. 그리고

당신이 느끼든 느끼지 못하든 우주는
