A Korean handbook, "Healthy Lifestyle by Changing One's Life Habits," wrtten by Kim Yong-won and published by Prunsol Publishing Co. this year is a very informative guide to read for anyone who is nearly nonagenarian, like me, in our centennial-living era.

I happened to obtain this instructive piece at a special occasion for celebrating Kim's 90th birthday, concurrently his 65th wedding anniversary with his spouse Shin Gap-soon, my sister's childhood mate. It convened at the CloudMindStoneFace Museum located in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul, on July 20.  The Kim & Shin couple invited me and my wife this rare event involving art displays and musocal performances.

The 159-page publication encompasses 22 behaviors that promote physical, mental and social well-being, ultimately reducing the risk of disease. It involves making conscious choices about diet, exercise, adequate sleep, stress management and harmful habits. Some of them may be pointed out in my own experiments.

Since I am a standing gourmand, it has been difficult for me to refrain from eating too well. However, I am now endeavoring the eat-less theory on a slow-but-steady basis for healthy eating day after day. Making the leap from thinking about changes to taking actions is normally hard and may take time. I need to eat less and avoid taking three full meals a day for the benefit of my digestion. Healthy eating maintains comfortable weight control and protects me from health problems like obesity and diabetes, as far as my experiment goes.

As Kim mentions in his book, I know breathing involves two phases. Breathing in through my nose as deep down into my belly, and out slowly through my mouth later is an interesting physical movement. Output first and input later for breathing is the method he taught me through my reading.

The importance of my leg muscle strength has no need to be emphasized. I understand Kim has been playing golf for pleasure and can still drive his car as a nonagenarian. Due to the pain of the crooks inside the curves of my knees, I stopped playing golf in 2024, I refrain from walking fast on upward and downward slopes and no longer drive my vehicle after the turmoil of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Keeping away from watching TV and limiting naps are convincing instructions for me to follow. In fact, I have wasted too much time lying down to watch both international and domestic news programs and falling into a midday siesta. I drink a lot of water despite my frequent urination habits because of the enlargement of my prostate gland.

Old habits die hard. Changing one¡¯s habits is a process that involves several stages. Sometimes it takes a while before changes become new habits.

As an octogenarian who will become a nonagenarian within a few years, I think Kim¡¯s health guidebook is a wise read for my associates, colleagues and neighbors. I wish the Kim & Shin couple good luck and happiness for their energetic daily healthy lifestyle as they approach their twilight years aiming for healthy aging as new centenarians.
