It seems the love
I've known has always been
the most destructive kind
Yes, that's why now
I feel so old
before my time

Yesterday
when I was young
The taste of life was sweet
As rain upon my tounge

I teased that life
as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze
may tease a candle flame

The thousand dreams I dreamed
the splendid things I planned
I always built to last
on weak and shifting sand

I lived by night
shun the naked light of day
And only now I see
how the years ran away

Yesterday when I was young
so many happy songs
were waiting to be sung

So many wild pleasures
lay in store for me
And so much pain
my dazzled eyes refused to see

I ran so fast that time
and knew the last ran out
I never stopped to think
what life was all about

And every conversation
I can now recall
concerned itself with me
and nothing else at all


Yesterday
the moon was blue
And every crazy day
brought something new to do

I used my magic age
as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste
and emptiness beyond

The game of love I played
with arrogance and pride
And every flame
I lit too quickly quickly die

The friends I made
all seem somehow to drift away
And only I am left
on stage to end the play

There are so many songs
that needed and wanted to be sung
I feel the bitter taste
of tears upon my tongue
The time has come for me to pay
for yesterday when I was young



내가 알고있던 사랑은
늘 가장 파괴적인
사랑이었던 것 같아요.
그래요, 그래서
이젠 나의 지난 시절이
진부하다고 느껴지나봐요.

내가 어릴 적에
삶의 맛은
나의 혀끝으로 느끼는
비처럼 달콤했었지요

난 삶이 마치 어리석은 게임일거라
여기면서 삶을 비웃었어요
저녁 바람이 촛불을
조롱하듯이 말이에요.

난 수많은 꿈들을 꾸고
놀라운 계획들을 세웠어요.
난 늘 연약하고 무너지기 쉬운
모래 위에서 견디도록 세웠었지요.

난 환히 빛나는 낮을 피해
밤에만 살아왔지요.
이제서야 세월이
어떻게 지났는지 알 수 있어요.

내가 어린 시절에
수많은 즐거운 노래들이
불려졌고

수많은 무분별한 쾌락들이
나를 위해서 마련되어 있었지요.
너무 고통스럽고
놀란 나머지 바라 보고싶지 않았어요.

난 너무 시간을 허비했었고
마지막 남은 시간도 없다는 걸 알게 되었지요.
난 인생이 도대체 무엇인지
생각해본 적도 없었어요.

이제 내가 기억하는
모든 이야기들은
다른 어떤 것이 아닌
나와 관련이 있는 것들이 었어요.


지난 시절
달빛마저 우울했고
새로운 무엇인가를 하고자
열정적인 날들의 연속이었지요.

마치 내가 요술 지팡이를 가진 것처럼
나의 신비스러운 시절을 낭비했지요.
결코 내가 허비한 것들과
공허함들을 보지 못했어요.

난 교만과 자만으로
사랑의 게임을 즐겼지요
너무 빨리 사랑을 하게되고는
너무 쉽게 식어버렸지요.

내가 사귀었던 친구들은
어떻게든 떠나는 것 같았어요,
극의 마지막까지 무대에
남아있는 건 나 일뿐이에요.

불려져야만 하고
부르기를 원했던 수많은 노래들이 있지요
난 나의 혀끝으로
눈물의 쓴맛을 느끼지요.
내가 지난 어린 시절에 했던
일들의 대가를 치를 때가 온 거지요.
