2004. 9. 11. 대전의 유성소재 아드리아 호텔에서 이재영교수의 한국과학기술원(KAIST-Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) 신소재공학부 교수로서의 정년퇴임기념 동창모임이 있었는데 현재까지의 연구과제에 대한 심포지움이 있었고 그 마지막 부분에서 후학들에게 이런 말을 남겼다.

"노병은 죽지 않는다. 죽지 않는 노병은 백 전을 치른 노병 이어야한다. 난 백 전을 치를 노력을 했는데 이것이 죽지 않을 만큼 노력 한 건지 잘 모르겠다"

앞 부분은 확실히 Douglas MacArthur(1880~1964) 장군이 1951년 4월 19일 국회에서의 퇴임연설에서 한 말인데

---- I am closing my 52 years of military service. When I joined the Army, even before the turn of the century, it was the fulfillment of all of my boyish hopes and dreams. The world has turned over many times since I took the oath on the plain at West Point, and the hopes and dreams have long since vanished, but I still remember the refrain of one of the most popular barrack ballads of that day which proclaimed most proudly that "old soldiers never die; they just fade away."

And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty.

여기에 가미된 이재영 교수의 말은 알 것도 같고 모를 것도 같아 본인이 직접 어록에 함축된 내용을 알아듣기 쉽게 게시판에 그 풀이를 남겨 주시면 감사하겠습니다.

이 날, 아래사진의 동문들(좌로부터 최권용 10회 동창회장, 최종우, 황정웅, 이재영주인공, 최윤만, 원제혁, 차균현)이 참석하였었는데 모든 동문들의 표정들이 밝아서 아주 기분이 좋습니다. 앞으로 살아가면서 항상 이렇게 기분 좋은 표정을 지으며 살아갈 수 있어야 하는데 말입니다.


최윤만 동문의 앞에 놓여있는 병의 사진을 확대하여 보니 1953년부터 Queen ElizabethⅡ의 대관식을 기념하여 만들기 시작했다는 그 유명한 "Royal Salute"병입니다. 역시 기분이 좋왔겠읍니다.
